5-Out Pass-Cut-Fill

The first thing to teach in a motion offence: pass, cut to the rim, and everybody behind the ball fills up one spot. One cycle is shown here — the cutter clears to the opposite corner, the corner fills the wing and the wing fills the top, so the floor is back in shape and the next player can do the same.

Auch bekannt als: pass and cut, basket cut and fill, open post motion

Coaching-Punkte

  • Pass, wait one beat, then cut. Cutting on the pass gets you nothing.
  • Cut on the top foot, straight at the rim, with your hands ready.
  • No layup means keep going. Clear to the opposite corner and get out of the way.
  • Everybody behind the ball fills up one spot. Corner to wing, wing to top.
  • Fill at speed. A slow fill leaves a gap the defense can sit in.

This is the first thing to teach in any motion offense, and for a lot of teams it is the only thing they need. Five players around the arc, nobody inside, and one rule: when you pass, you cut to the basket.

One cycle is shown here. The pass goes to the wing, the passer waits a beat and cuts through the middle. If nothing is there he clears to the far corner, and everybody behind the ball moves up one spot. The floor is back in shape and the next man does the same thing.

The read

The cutter is reading one defender: his own. If that man turns his head to watch the ball, the cut is a layup. If he jumps into the passing lane, the cut goes behind him.

That is the whole offense. Everything else is spacing.

If your man stops looking at you, go.

Teaching it

The beat before the cut is what most teams miss. Cutting immediately on the pass means the passer and the ball arrive at the same defender at the same time, and nothing opens. One count, then go.

The fill is the other half. Players want to watch the cut. If the corner does not lift to the wing and the wing does not lift to the top, the next pass has nowhere to go and the offense stalls after one action.

Run it as a five-on-zero cycle for a week until the filling is automatic, then add defenders. It teaches spacing, timing and cutting at the same time, which makes it the best use of practice minutes a young team has.

Konter

  • If the defender jumps to the ball on the pass, cut backdoor behind him instead of in front.
  • If they deny the wing, the cutter's man has to help and the give-and-go is open.
  • Against a sagging defense that will not follow the cut, stop and shoot from the top.
