Overload vs 2-3

Against a 2-3 the offence floods one side with four players — slot, wing, short corner and a flasher in the middle — so the three baseline defenders have to cover four. The short-corner catch pulls the bottom defender out and the gap behind him is the shot.

Coaching-Punkte

  • Everybody slides to the ball side on the entry. Four attackers below the free-throw line against three defenders.
  • The short corner is the spot the bottom defender has to cover and does not want to.
  • The flasher sits at the elbow, in the seam, not on a defender's chest.
  • Feed the short corner and look inside immediately, before the middle defender can recover.
  • Keep one man above the ball on the weak side as the release.

An overload does not try to beat a 2-3 with movement. It beats it with arithmetic. Flood one side with four players and the three defenders along the baseline have four men to account for.

The ball goes to the wing, the slots fill above it on both sides, and a big flashes to the elbow. Now you have a slot, a wing, a short corner and a man in the middle, all on one side.

The read

The short corner is the trigger. The bottom defender on that side has to come out to it, because a shot from there goes in at a decent rate and nobody else is close enough.

The moment he leaves, the space behind him belongs to nobody. The elbow flasher dives into it and the pass comes back inside before the middle defender can slide across.

Where it breaks

Players stand still. An overload is not a formation you hold; it is a shape you move inside. If the short corner catches it and holds the ball for two counts, the zone has recovered and you have a contested shot.

The other failure is reversing too early. Coaches tell teams to swing the ball against a zone, and that is right, but reversing before the overload has forced a decision just gives the defense a free shift.

Make them commit on one side first. Then either finish it there or reverse it and run the same four-on-three on the other side.

Konter

  • If the bottom defender stays inside and gives up the short corner, shoot the twelve-footer.
  • If the middle defender drops early to cover the dive, the elbow flasher is open for the jumper.
  • If the top of the zone traps the wing, reverse it and run the overload on the other side.
