A pocket pass is the short, usually one-handed pass from the ball handler to the roller, delivered into the pocket of space between the big who is dropping toward the rim and the guard who is chasing over the screen. It is thrown early, off the dribble, into a gap that is only open for about a second.

Why coaches use it

It is the pass that drop coverage cannot solve. The dropping big has one job, which is to stay between the ball and the basket, and the moment he commits to the ball handler the roller is behind him. Throw it then and the roll is a layup or a foul.

Timing beats accuracy here. The usual mistake is waiting: the handler takes a third dribble, the big plants his feet, the help arrives, and the window that was there two beats ago is gone. Teach it off the second dribble past the screen.

Mechanics matter too. It is one hand, off the dribble, with no gather. A two-handed chest pass means picking the ball up, and picking the ball up tells every defender on the floor what is coming.

What to watch for

  • Thrown late it is a charge, or a steal by the weak-side defender who came across to tag the roller.
  • The roller has to catch it on the move and go straight up. A catch, a gather and a pivot gives the low man time to arrive.
  • Against a switch there is no pocket at all. The read becomes a lob over the smaller defender, or a reset.

The pass looks the same on every diagram. Watch it once at quarter speed against Drop and once against Switch, and your players will stop throwing it into the second one.
