Floppy

The shooter starts under the rim with a single screen on one side and a double on the other, and picks whichever side his defender plays wrong. He is the only one who has to make a decision, which makes it a good action for a young team with one shooter.

Also called: single-double, single double

    • 3 screens for 2
    • 4 screens for 2
    • 5 screens for 2
    • 2 cuts to the right wing
    • 2 cuts to the left corneroption
    • 1 passes to 2

    2Phase 2

Catch it going away from the rim and turn the corner into the shot.

    • 3 cuts to the left short corner
    • 2 shoots

Teaching points

  • 2 starts under the rim and does not move until all three screeners have their feet set.
  • The shooter picks the side, not the coach. Read the defender, then go.
  • Take the double side when your man is trailing you, and the single side when he is fighting over the top of it.
  • Catch it going away from the basket and turn into the shot in one motion.
  • 3 clears to the short corner after the screen so the catch has room in front of it.

Floppy is a one-decision play, which is exactly what you want when you have one shooter and four players who are still learning. Everybody else has a job with no reading in it. 2 is the only one who chooses.

He stands under the rim with a single screen on one side and a double on the other. Whichever way his defender plays it wrong, he goes the other way.

The read

Two rules, and they are enough.

If his man is trailing behind him, go to the double. Two screens in a row is more than a trailing defender can survive, and the catch happens at the wing with separation.

If his man is sitting on top of the screens, refusing to let him use them, go to the single side. A defender committed to one side cannot cover the other.

Whichever side he is standing on, run away from him.

Teaching it

The screeners have one instruction: set your feet and stay set. The temptation is to move with the cutter, and a moving screen is an offensive foul at every level.

For the shooter, drill the catch before the cut. He is catching while moving away from the rim, which means the feet have to land under him, not behind him. Twenty reps of catch-and-shoot moving to the wing will do more for this play than twenty reps of the cut.

If you have a second shooter, run the same action with him under the rim. Nothing else changes.

Counters

  • Against a top-lock on the double, cut the single side instead and let the top-lock chase.
  • Against a switch on the first screen, 2 keeps running to the second one and takes the mismatch to the arc.
  • If both screeners are switched, 3 is sealing a smaller man inside.
