Horns Flare

Out of Horns the point guard enters to one elbow and is immediately flared by the other big, which turns a routine entry into a wide-open skip. The first read is the flare three; if the defence jumps the skip the screener has a clean dive to the rim behind it.

Also called: horns fan, elbow flare

Catch it on the hop and shoot it — that is the play.

    • 1 shoots

Teaching points

  • 2 clears through the baseline before anything else happens, and he clears all the way to the far corner.
  • 4 sets the flare before 1 moves. The screen waits for the cutter, never the other way around.
  • 1 steps toward the ball for one count, then flares away. Sell the first step.
  • 5 skips it over the top of the defense, not around it, and he throws it on the hop.
  • 4 dives to the rim the moment the skip leaves 5's hands.

Horns Flare is the cheapest three in the set. Nothing unusual happens: the point guard makes the entry pass every team makes, and then gets screened for it.

1 enters to the elbow and 2 empties the strong side by clearing along the baseline. Now there is one big at each elbow, one ball handler, and a completely empty weak side. 4 turns and flares 1 toward the slot he just left, and 5 throws over the top.

The read

This is a two-man read between 1 and 4, and the defense picks which one you get.

Chase the flare and 1 catches it moving away from the rim with his feet set. Switch it and a guard is suddenly responsible for 4 diving to the front of the rim. Jump the skip pass and 4 is free behind it.

The screener always scores against the coverage that stops the cutter.

Teaching it

The whole play lives or dies on 5’s pass. It has to go over the top, it has to be on time, and it has to arrive while 1 is still moving. A pass thrown around the defense arrives late and low, and the closeout gets there.

Drill it without defenders first: entry, clear, flare, skip, shoot. Ten reps each side. Then add one defender on 1 and let him choose to go over, under or switch, so 1 learns to read it rather than run to a spot.

Counters

  • If they switch the flare, 4 is rolling to the rim with a guard on him. Skip it late and look inside.
  • If the defender jumps the skip and beats 1 to the spot, 4's dive behind it is the shot.
  • If they top-lock the flare and refuse it, 1 back cuts to the rim off the same screen.
